Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser Tattoo Removal: Is Tattoo Removal Laser a Reality for Undoing Your Past Tattoo Regrets?

Tattoos are nothing new, in the American culture or in any other. Ancient civilizations have been known to have tattoos, and the United States is not the only society in which tattoos are so mainstream. In the past, they have been used for religious and societal purposes, as well as a means of artistic self expression. The only problem is that although you may age and mature, your tattoo will not. For this reason, there may very well come a day when the body art that you were once so proud of is nothing more than another scar on the body worth hiding. This is where tattoo removal by laser comes into play.

The word Laser is the acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. These lasers are extremely intense beams of light that are used to greatly lighten or actually remove your tattoo. This Laser energy may be used as either a continuous light wave or may even be delivered as light pulses, depending on the type Laser being used or type of treatment being received.

This super high-energy light beam is actually capable cutting, sealing or even performing "targeted" vaporization of skin tissue and blood vessels. Ordinary light made from a non-Laser source is made up of many different wave lengths/colors, and it all appears as a white light to us.

However, the light used in Lasers has a very wide spectrum which can be varied in intensity and pulses. These wavelengths and pulses which are also known as Intense Pulsed Light (I.P.L.) also have the ability to treat certain medical conditions in dermal surgery and skin pigmentation.

There are many different types of Lasers being used today to treat various medical problems, however for our purposes, which is the lightening or actual removal of a tattoo, there are primarily three main types of Lasers being used. And, all three of these Lasers are called "Q-Switched Lasers". Q-Switched Laser is another way of saying that the Laser is a very high intensity Laser.

These three Q-Switched Lasers are known as the Ruby Laser, Alexandrite Laser and the NdYAG Laser. Even though these three Lsers are the ones most commonly used for tattoo fading or removal, it should be remembered that the NdYAG Laser produces more scabbing and blistering than the Ruby or Alexandrite Laser.

Of course, laser tattoo removal is not the only method of tattoo removal worth examining, but it is the one with the most instantaneous gratification. Old boyfriend and girlfriends' names, past nicknames, neighborhood or borough names, and even old symbols are among the most regretted of tattoos among people all over the world, and this is why people turn to laser tattoo removal.

Being that it is not an inexpensive procedure, the decision to get your tattoo removed by laser is one that must not be gone into in a hasty manner. There is a degree of discomfort that must be considered, as well as the effectiveness of the procedure on you.

Depending on your tattoo and the tone and color of your skin, tattoo removal by laser may have a less desirable effect on you than you might be hoping for, as extremely well done tattoos and tattoos done on darker skin are not good candidates for laser tattoo removal.

Another thing that must be taken into consideration is the healing process. Those who heal well may do better with this tattoo removal method than others, and of course those with smaller tattoos are better candidates for this procedure than others. Those who weren't able to deal well with the pain of getting the tattoo in the first place might also reconsider a decision to get their tattoo removed by laser; the pain of the procedure itself matches or exceeds the pain of getting inked in the first place, and the discomfort that comes after often lasts just as long, if not more so.

Laser tattoo removal treatments can give you quite outstanding results if you know what questions to ask your Doctor up front before you begin any treatments.

Some of the questions you may want to ask your Doctor prior to Laser treatments:

  1. How many years have you been doing Laser tattoo removal treatments?
  2. Will it hurt?
  3. What kind of results can I expect?
  4. Do you own your own Laser equipment? (Any Doctor who does this for a substantial part of their practice will own their own Laser equipment.)
  5. How much will these Laser treatments cost? This is a very important question that you may want to ask prior to your Laser removal treatments because the cost can range from several hundreds of dollars into thousands of dollars, depending on the factors mentioned above.
  6. Will my hospitalization or medical insurance cover any of the Laser treatments? (Normally, your insurance will not cover it, but you may want to ask just to be certain.)
  7. Do you have any patient testimonials or pictures for any of the treatments you have performed for your patients?

The decision to choose laser tattoo removal as your method of ink removal is completely up to you, but it is important to know that it is not a procedure to be entered into lightly.

It isn't for everyone, and being that it is a cosmetic procedure, your medical insurance probably will not cover it. Explore all of your options before resorting to tattoo removal by laser; there just may be a better, more effective option for you out there—it is just a matter of finding it.

But, rest assured, you have come to the right place to begin your journey.
